FESTIVAL MLADI LEVI

Mladi levi 2020

We have talked a lot in recent years about readiness for change, about action and just transition, but we neither imagined nor wished for the reality we live in now. The pandemics has shut down life in less than a month. Traffic came to a stop, schools, theatres, shops and inns closed down. Is this a break or the beginning of a new reality? The beginning of something that slips through our fingers, that is unpredictable, elusive, unknown – but something we know that awaits us. We don’t even know if it’s far away or quite near, and no matter how much we want the old reality back, it’s gone, it went away like that grandmother with the cakes.
These times are marked by immense fragility, vulnerability, fear, as well as anger – and the theatre is not afraid to show all these feelings. The vulnerability of our bodies, relationships, the vulnerability of nature and the endless waiting. “In order to avoid having to kill you themselves, they infected you with the waiting that keeps you alive and is killing you slowly”, said Bosnian Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, describing waiting, which can be one of the greatest forms of violence. “If you infect a person with waiting, it’s the safest way to control them, to make them immobile and harmless, completely and for good. This deception of waiting is harder than any prison and stronger than the strongest bullies. For some, a century of torturous and fruitless waiting has gone by, and for others – they get everything they want and dare, without having to wait.” They say the corona virus brought out the best and the worst in people. Inequality has only deepened, too many are feasting at the expense of the hardship of others. On the other hand, the crisis brought people together, new ways of mutual help, action, resilience and solidarity emerged.

We have to keep ourselves in good condition, the creative condition, the condition of a critical view of the world, and the condition of the audience. Everything we love most about theatre – its essence – is to stick together in the dark, to breathe the same air, to socialize, to touch each other both physically and mentally, to exchange views, feelings, flows of thought and imagination. All this has slipped away from us overnight like water through our fingers. We have put together and then tore down this year’s Mladi Levi programme countless times, only to put it together again and in different combination, depending on the epidemiological picture and travel options. But it’s not over yet. The programme keeps changing, we scattered it across various venues of the Tabor district, and its final version will not be clear until the final scene of the final performance.

We didn’t want to give up the international part of the festival, but we have changed its nature and our way of working. The Bunker team designed it organically, and already at the beginning of the pandemics we commissioned several works by local artists to be presented during the festival.
And what about socializing? Mladi Levi festival is known for its great opening party and dancing. Unfortunately, this will not be the case this year in view of our common concern for others. However, this will not take away our joy, the joy of socializing – albeit in small clusters – chatting and meeting. And above all, these complicated times will not rob us of our love for art. Theatre cannot be stopped, but we can rethink and reinvent it time and again.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL MLADI LEVI

International festival Mladi Levi is one of the more prominent annual events of the Bunker Institute, bringing the most current stage performers from all over the world to Ljubljana every end of the summer, since 1998. It bears a mark of a demanding artistic profile, placed within the arena of contemporary progressive theatre and takes pride in its reputation for discovering young talents. The Festival has a distinctive atmosphere, marked with creativity and vibrant spirit, curious audience and social nature.

Festival Mladi Levi inhabits a place of encounters and surprises, continuously opening up to foreign artists and guests, who take pleasure in art and spread contemporary artistic or social topics in front of one another. It is a place of exchange as well as a cradle of new ideas, friendships and co-operations, which frequently extend beyond the local concepts or borders in the process of their growth.
