The 23rd International Drugajanje Festival connects professional contemporary performing arts with high school students, cultural organizations with schools, and, ultimately, different Slovenian cities hosting the festival – this year, Maribor, Celje, Ptuj, Ljutomer, and Kranj. This spirit of connection is also reflected in the artistic program, which this year features collaborations between Slovenian artists or producers and artists and producers from other countries. A Dinner of Liquid Tales was crafted by a Slovenian-Mexican duo, some things touch emerges from Slovenian-Hungarian friendship, and the dance performance Treatise was created at the artistic intersection of Poland, Slovenia, and Slovakia. The performance by Croatian playwright and writer this is my truth, tell me yours is the result of a collaboration between Slovenian and Croatian producers, while its punchline is the unfortunate consequence of one of the Slovenian theater’s performances.
This year, Drugajanje places special emphasis on contemporary dance, a form less frequently encountered within the school system. Despite this (or perhaps because of it), the festival remains loyal to non-classical formats, which stem from devised theater, intertwining real personal experiences with fiction: loud bangs, feminism, Slovenian mountain trails, a father’s secrets revealed in a storm, fateful encounters, and the endless accumulation of information enabled by modern technology.
