Olinka Vištica & Dražen Grubišić: MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS – LOVE’S FINAL THEATRE
Museum of Broken Relationships is a place that brings together the remains, the treasures of everyday, sometimes even bizarre objects from all over the world, which had to find a new place to live due to broken or excessive love. The items in the museum filled with stories of breakdowns and abysses include a wedding dress in a glass storage jar, a Muslim praying mat, fuzzy pink handcuffs, as well as a fish shaped balloon, blown by the breath of someone who no longer breathes. The Museum whose home is in Zagreb and has travelled the world, has made its first international apperance in 2006 at Mladi levi festival. After that, the museum and the festival parted their ways for a while, very painlessly, very friendly, with the best farewell wish for each other, and they stayed in touch. Fourteen years later, they will meet again, in another form, with deepened life experiences, not only through the items of broken loves, but in a lecture performance by the museum’s founders, the protagonists of the broken love, Croatian film producer Olinka Vištica and Croatian sculptor Dražen Grubišić, who began collecting, as an estranged couple, relics of other failed loves. The lecture performance Love’s Final Theatre is a narrative of hybrid authorship somewhere between an everyday documentation of life and its artistic sublimation, curious voyeurism, and cultural anthropology. For the most part, it is a story of losses that have been breaking the hearts of all of us before, and of a time when we did not yet know that the confession “I love you more than anything in the world” would not last forever.
