Biennial of Slovene contemporary dance
by BETON Ltd.
Beton Ltd. are active members of the group Betontanc, which was founded in the early 90s by the director Matjaž Pograjc and is since one of the leading Slovenian collectives in the field of contemporary performing arts. In September 2010 Primož Bezjak, Branko Jordan and Katarina Stegnar launched the first original project under the name Beton Ltd., the name referring to a limited liability company, entitled So far away (Introduction to Ego-logy), produced by Bunker.
The Beton Ltd. collective is always tackling problems of the contemporary world with much self-reflection and humour, with innovative performing practices and methods. The starting point of the performance I Say What I Am Told To Say is Beckett’s novel The Unnamable and the mechanism of interpretation enabling the “translation of a generation”, which is living in a time of doubt, anxiety, fear and some intangible horror, subordinated to the rule of constant self-questioning, self-persuading and verifying the own identity.
The continuation of the Beton Ltd. poetics is most directly connected to the question of ego-logy as dreadful status quo, where conscience, consciousness and responsibility for the world or the place of the other in it don’t play any other role than serving to subordinate to external rules. And this is not so much about a new aesthetics, as it is about the “state” of our operation, which has become impossible to co-create. Art has nothing to do with clarity – no matter how much the latter is of our interest or is (in)directly touching us.
