CHAPTER 2: Dreaming of landscape

The first year of the Multispecies Landscape by artist Teri Žeželj explores four methodologies for practicing a different relationship with the landscapes in which we live. The central methodology of the second chapter is imagination, I which we are mainly interested as a space of crossroads – a space of multiple worlds and an important space for practicing interspecies relations and synchronizing with different rhythms of life. How can we coexist and maintain relationships with the unknown, invisible, potential or immaterial? How to host a space where different perspectives can coexist? In various traditions and lore, the summer solstice and Midsummer Night (June 23) have magical powers, and one of the well-known ancient religious wisdoms is that on Midsummer's Night, fern seeds enable the understanding of the languages of other living beings with whom we share the world. For this reason, we opened Chapter Two on the summer solstice, June 21, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. with a two-day workshop with Mala Kline, choreographer, performer, writer and expert in individual and collective dreaming. During two two-hour meetings, we experienced and learned about working with imagination, which opens up different ways of knowing and teaches "to read the signs and symbols of the dream…

The third chapter: TO HOST THE LANDSCAPE

performative walkHave you ever been to the woods? Now, I can imagine, you're smiling gently, but not without a hint of sarcasm.“Of course” you say to yourself. “What kind of question is that?!”But have you really? Have you been to a real forest? The one that makes you pay the price for entering it?Walking is never innocent. It shapes the landscape as we go. It indulges the gaze.Walking is political. It creates realities, depending on where we go, with whom, when, on the weather, clothes, thoughts, feelings, health conditions, terrains, shapes, plants, types of the ground, moisture of the soil and any other element that you can think of.I lost myself in the woods. Come walk through me!Participation in the walk was free, but reservations were required at info@bunker.si.Necessary equipment: smartphone or mp3 player and headphones. We send a link to an audio file, which was downloaded to smartphone or mp3 player and which was used during the walk.AUDIO FILEThe walk was in English. The performative walk is the 3rd chapter of the research art project MULTISPECIES LANDSCAPE by the artist Tery Žeželj.Conceived and executed by: Tery Žeželj & Maria Magdalena KozlowskaSound design and music: Blaž PavlicaProducer: Maja VižinPublic relations: Tamara Bračič VidmarProduced…

THE FIRST CHAPTER: OBSERVATION

The first chapter of Multispecies Landscapes places observation at the centre of searching and understanding ways of living in and with multispecies landscapes. In early January 2022, Tery set her first goal: observation as a method of learning about the landscape. She began with the daily practice of observing, photographing, and describing a small fragment of the Beatrixpark in Utrecht as a way to explore her own gaze, perception, attention, attitude toward the observed fragment, and to observe the change of all of the above. Over time, the question that became increasingly important was: What influences and shapes the view?By regularly describing a small fragment of the park, it became clear that language and vocabulary strongly influence the perception of the elements that are creating the landscape, which established “landscape literacy” and various practices and approaches to “reading” the landscape as the main topics of the research. The working hypothesis that “landscape literacy” strongly influences our relationship with the environment brings to the debate the importance of learning and unlearning the gaze and ways of observation, and the topic of attention as historically and culturally shaped. The first event of Multispecies Landscapes will be a reading group in which we will…

LEA KUKOVIČIČ: FORSALE, ARTIST TALK

Theatre is useless, it does not produce a neoliberal wish to spend. In this artist talk, artist Lea Kukovičič extensively analyses the project FORSALE, a conceptual artwork that goes beyond theatre and plays with the economy.FORSALE is a performance auction house established in 2021 as the first auction house in the world auctioning theatre performances. The historical first auction was held in Slovenia at the contemporary performing arts festival Mladi Levi auctioning the performance Ich kann nicht anders by Slovene collective Beton Ltd. The average sales share at the auction was over 65%, which is higher than the average auction sales shares made by the world-renowned auction houses Sotheby’s and Christie’s. FORSALE is an auction house, yet an intriguing conceptual artwork with provocative content created by artist and theatre maker Lea Kukovičič, who (together with an extensive team of collaborators) stepped right into the void of the most trusted, popular and hyped fiction: money (and law).Artist talk FORSALE reveals the layers of mechanisms beyond money (and law) and maps the matrix of theatre where one needs to step into the heart of darkness with other people. Because FORSALE is not about care or about theatre. FORSALE messes with the economy.Created…

Jan Rozman: MEMEMEME

Who is ‘me’ in ‘meme’ in ‘MEMEMEME’?MEMEMEME is the space of a community’s flow of association, a clash of an infinite number of memes* and their reverberations. Through the performers’ bodies, their mobile phones and digital video and sound references and associations, the performance layers gestures, movements, images and expressions. Its performative score plays with and around the mechanics and aesthetics of internet memes. As a living mimetic organism, the stage actions are multiplied and repeated, diversified and mutated to open up the potential semantic splits and gaps that reflect the fragmented and alienated nature of modern communication and the internet society.*A meme is any idea that is, despite its potential randomness or nonsense, repeated and multiplied through variation and selection. The term meme (from Ancient Greek mimeme, ‘imitated thing’) was coined by biologist Richard Dawkins as a cultural equivalent of a gene to designate language, stories, knowledges, habits, styles and behaviour that is transmitted through imitation. As a consequence of the near universal use of the internet in the digital age, the most widespread, flexible, resilient, and circulated are precisely (viral) internet memes.CollaboratorsConcept, Direction & Choreography: Jan RozmanPerformers: Peter Frankl, Kaja Janjić, Julija Pečnikar, Daniel PetkovićDramaturgy: Varja HrvatinSounds and…
