The title of the piece is “this is my truth tell me yours” which is actually a quote of a quote, but the piece itself doesn’t deal with these quotes, it’s more about some of my own “truths”. I have been working as a writer and a dramaturg for almost 15 years, but lately I have been thinking about wanting to do something else, because I think art is really fucked and because art really fucked me up. But then I made this piece about how art fucked me up, and I actually realised it’s more of a love-hate relationship between me and art. And I realized I actually often really like art. And just as the present, the fleeting moment of reality, is made up of different spheres, people, sounds and impressions that infiltrate the individual, the concert combines different artistic expressions – video, music, poetry, and, ultimately, a mechanical fish in an aquarium – which work together to create a holistic experience of not only music but also atmosphere. Following the play Grannies (2020), Girls are second collaboration between Ljubljana-based director Tjaša Črnigoj and Rijeka-based collective Kolektiv Igralke.This time, the creators delve into topics of growing up, first sexual experiences, and the sex education received by different generations of women. They explore what "losing virginity" meant to various generations, how much they feared unwanted pregnancies, and what empowered them in discovering their sexuality. Through an intimate excavation of family narratives, the performers and co-authors encounter shame and pain as well as pleasure, opening space for conversations about topics that are often left unspoken.Girls portray the changing times and sociopolitical systems through personal stories of women. Two people you may not necessarily know have decided to tie the knot, and the pozvačin’s job is to invite the villagers to their big wedding. The pozvačin must fulfil this important, perhaps even honourable task with joy and ingenuity, albeit somewhat awkwardly.Leon Marič’s performance is based on the still living tradition of the pozvačin (a wedding summoner) and places it alongside his own identity. Although at first glance it seems that Slovenian cultural heritage and the freedom of expression of the contemporary individual have little in common, it is precisely in their confrontation that the performance finds parallels between them, which are most evident in the author’s many “firsts”. The roots of the tradition in which he grew up run through him, as do elements of queer (night) culture that have helped him to emancipate himself.
