Three-day intensive arts education programmes for the third triad of elementary schools and for high schools
We are all familiar with the concept of schools in nature: they offer an alternative to the traditional school and home environments, providing an opportunity to learn, experience new things and spend time together in a different setting.
Welcome to Schools in Culture! We invite you to an urban environment to experience our three-day intensive programmes, which combine different art forms and offer opportunities to experience and learn, get to know cities and participate in artistic processes – including workshops, performances, visits to cultural institutions, discussions, walks, guided tours, and more.
School in Culture was inspired by and based on the positive experiences of outdoor schools – (schools in nature), but instead of nature, children and young people are immersed in … art and culture!
The Schools in Culture programme is free of charge and open to all primary school students in Years 7, 8 and 9, as well as all secondary school students – specifically, to all children and young people of this age from all Slovenian educational institutions. School in Culture is intended for groups such as classes or groups who attend the same subject together. One School in Culture is intended for groups of 20 or more children or young people with accompanying adults (teachers). All Slovenian educational institutions are invited to participate. The only rule is that you cannot participate in School in Culture in your own statistical region; you must visit another region for the cultural experience and education!
Meals are included in the programme and are provided free of charge for children, young people, and accompanying teaching staff. We provide breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and can also cater for dietary requirements.
Transport costs are covered by the school or students themselves. We encourage sustainable mobility, i.e. the use of public transport. While we can advise on or assist with organising transport, we cannot cover the costs.
The costs of accommodation are covered by the participants, i.e. students or the school. Schools in Culture offer four different accommodation options; specific arrangements can be made with the regional arts education coordinator when making a reservation.
- Free overnight stays in cultural institutions (based on the model of Museum Nights and Fairy-tale Nights): We can arrange improvised overnight stays in cultural institutions on cushions or folding beds, making the night part of the adventure. Overnight stays are in rooms with bathrooms and showers.
- Assistance with logistics, discounts, and reservations: We provide a list of local accommodation providers with whom we have agreed on group discounts or special packages.
- Accommodation at the school: in the form of school exchange programme (based on the Erasmus model and other exchanges) or as an affordable paid service. Schools have mattresses in gyms and a sufficient number of toilets and bathrooms, as well as kitchens, which allow for meal arrangements.
- Accommodation for students is organised by the school itself.
The School in Culture lasts for three days (and two nights). It usually takes place during the week, but exceptions are possible. It is held during the school year, and, in exceptional cases, also during the holidays.
Dates are available in the 2025/26 school year:
