LESS IS MORE

To accelerate the green transition in culture, Bunker will adopt the concept and practices of degrowth. The world’s resources are insufficient to sustain continuous increases in production and consumption. We must acknowledge this reality and apply it to the arts as well. By embracing degrowth within our organization, mobility, and outputs, we will explore ways to develop our own degrowth methodologies—drawing from existing models, including artistic ones—and refine them to a point where they become practical for others. This approach will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also minimize resource consumption across various areas.
Degrowth in organizations, performances, festivals, and mobility does not mean less art, culture, international collaboration, or audiences. Rather, it means less work, fewer new productions, fewer unnecessary projects, and lower CO2 emissions. We will approach degrowth with sensitivity to existing practices that are characteristic of peripheral areas rather than centers of power, which too often design the green transition without considering justice and global resource redistribution. Additionally, we will focus on developing performance indicators that align with degrowth principles—moving beyond purely financial and quantitative metrics to prioritize the well-being of all stakeholders.
The tested pilot models from the Less Is More project will be published in an online handbook, which we will distribute throughout the sector via partnerships and a final event—a presentation and celebration. We will also collaborate with other sectors and colleagues (both within this grant program and beyond) to form alliances for sharing and implementing best practices, as well as for pooling and redistributing resources—key elements of degrowth.

MAIN PROJECT ACTIVITIES:

In addition to project management, communication, and dissemination, we will work with our partners—Policy Lab, the Institute for Spatial Policies (IPOP), and the Wuppertal Institute—to implement the following activities:
  • Degrowth of our organization, primarily in the area of labor (key partner: Policy Lab)
  • Degrowth of production (outputs: events), with a focus on fewer productions and more post-production through sustainable mobility (key partner: Wuppertal Institute)
  • Degrowth of mobility, both for employees and for mobility organized for others as part of our international activities (key partner: IPOOP)
  • Evaluation, including carbon footprint measurement
  • “Less Is More” degrowth handbook and final event at the Mladi Levi festival in August 2026
Bunker is a cultural organization operating in the field of contemporary performing arts, meaning all activities will be shaped by our core discipline. At the same time, we will seek solutions, models, and strategies that can be applied by similar organizations and beyond.

METHODOLOGY

We will be using The Degrowth Toolbox for Artistic Practices, developed in 2021 by Alexandra Papademetriou.
This methodology outlines eight strategic shifts, which we will apply to Bunker’s operations while integrating Policy Lab’s guidelines and adapting them to our local context and the performing arts sector:
•Slowness / Idleness
•Visibility of care work
•Resource sharing
•Creating alternative and independent spaces and platforms
•Self-organization
•Redirecting institutional resources (or how to be cunning)
•Militant optimism or utopianism as a strategy
•Navigating contradictions—or how to stay with the trouble
We believe that this methodology aligns closely with both our organizational and personal ethos.
