Clément Layes comes from a French circus school and has studied philosophy, art history, and contemporary dance. In the performance Allege, his knowledge from all these fields is thoughtfully interwoven.
While announcing all musical and lighting changes himself during the performance, he skillfully balances a glass of water—first on his neck, then rolling it onto his forehead, and finally carrying it on his temples. Through elements of burlesque in the style of Charlie Chaplin, he explores deeper themes of freedom, limitation, and absurdity. He seeks to transform everything that appears random or arbitrary into meaning, creating order out of chaos by giving objects and their relationships a sense of purpose.
Allege originally started as a quartet, then became a duet, and is now a solo performance. However, the author says that the development of the piece is not yet complete—there is still time for that…
