Oliver Frljić: I HATE THE TRUTH!

Oliver Frljić’s performances across the former Yugoslav republics always tackle the most painful stories—those a nation wants to forget or at least remain silent about. I Hate the Truth! is an intimate, biographical, and documentary-style performance, centered on the traumatic story of the director’s own family. The audience seems as if they have come for a visit and are now witnessing the unraveling of family history.
Frljić builds the dramatic arc through memories, documents, and testimonies… Yet, like in Rashomon, each family member has their own version of the same story. A play within a play. What really happened? Did the mother truly beat her son all the time? Did she really love him more than his sister? What is fiction, and what is a lie? Must the truth be hated? Or is the history of a family saga just another construct, like any other history?
