Who is Mart Kangro?
Mart Kangro is one of the most influential Estonian artists in the field of contemporary dance and performance. He is also well known in Slovenia, as he has already presented two performances at the Mladi levi festival together with his Estonian colleagues Eero Epner and Juhan Ulfsak. Together with artists Primož Bezjak, Katarina Stegnar and Branko Jordan, he co-created the performance FUN FACT, which will be restaged at Stara elektrarna on April 11 and 12.
Kangro is known for his conceptual, philosophical, and deeply reflective approach to embodiment, presence, and the semiotics of the stage. His practice combines choreography, devised theatre, and performative research, making him an exceptional mentor for artists wishing to develop professionally in the field of physical performance.

What will the workshop be like?
Over three days, participants will explore Kangro’s characteristic themes: presence and disappearance, memory and forgetting, embodiment as a form of research, and the subtle dramaturgies of gesture. Drawing from his extensive artistic experience — from classical ballet and work at the Estonian National Opera to numerous important European collaborations — Kangro will guide participants through processes of movement exploration, working with text, reflection, and sensory awareness. The focus is on understanding performance as a “philosophy in action,” where thought becomes physical, minimal actions gain meaning, and performers develop precision, intelligence, and vulnerability.

Who is it for?
The workshop is intended for students and professional creators in the fields of dance, theatre, or performance art who already have basic experience with body-based work and are interested in exploring physical presence on stage. It is suitable for curious and open participants who wish to deepen their understanding of physical performance.

The workshop is free of charge and will be held in English.
