Reproductive Labor, Ecofeminism, and the Invisible Infrastructure of Art

Who cleans up after growth? Who makes sure that systems function, bodies endure, communities don’t fall apart, and that art can happen in the first place? In a time of ecological crisis and depleted resources (both planetary and personal), the work of maintenance – care, reproduction, organisation, and renewal – often remains invisible, undervalued, and feminised.

This Discussion Café will use ecofeminist perspectives and the concept of degrowth to reflect on the relationships between ecology, labour, and art. What happens if we place maintenance at the centre instead of production, care instead of growth, and interdependence instead of the ideal of autonomy? How can we imagine artistic and social practices that are not based on constant expansion, but on the capacity to preserve, repair, and survive together?

Together with the speakers, we will explore questions about the invisible infrastructure of art and the political and economic conditions that make living and creating possible. If the future requires maintenance, who does it – and how can we place value on maintenance rather than on constant production?
