The performance takes its title from the manifesto of the same name, filled with misogyny and extremist ideology, written by Elliot Rodger before a mass shooting in the US. However, the piece goes a step further than just analysing the incel movement and the manosphere. It attempts to explore warped reality through layers, constantly shifting our perception via video, performance, costumes, and set design… which repeatedly undermine our certainty of what we are actually watching. The multi award-winning Norwegian company De Utvalgte, which previously performed at the Mladi Levi festival in 2007, 2010 and 2012, tackles the elusiveness of gender labels, loneliness, and the tension between desire and stereotypes, identity and fantasy, and the forbidden versus the prescribed – all from the perspective of (seemingly cis?) male characters. My Twisted World is a deep dive into the dark depths of the internet and, at the same time, a fluid transition between documentary and fiction.
