Maja Pelević, Betontanc: MAYBE WE ARE MICKEY MOUSE
The inspiration for the play Maybe We Are Mickey Mouse came from a graffiti in Belgrade depicting a couple—a boy and a girl—embracing, both wearing plastic mouse ears. At the center of the story is an old camera positioned in a passageway, through which characters come and go.
The play explores time and the individual’s relationship with frozen moments in life. It takes photography as its starting point—an art form that best reflects both the desire for eternity and the fear of impermanence. It examines frozen seconds—the fleeting instant when the camera flash goes off—and the longing to mourn a past moment when we were young. Mickey Mouse symbolizes eternal youth and the desire to never grow up, while also representing the imposed uniformity and automatism of consumerist society.
