City of Women: Barbara Kukovec, Katarina Stegnar, Urška Brodar: The Art of Living: The Act of Killing

You return to the countryside. You return to preach your gospel: art. With fire and blade, if you must. You emancipate, feminize, depatriarchalize and educate the women—hungry for contemporary performance. You draw them into artistic practice, build a community, face the tangled roots of their convictions— and then… Then, your community is shaken by an event no art can contain. An event that resists language, that defies response. It exists only as erasure, as death, as the void. So you begin the work. You borrow a drone, hire a digger, take a camera, bring shovels, gather spikes, buy a climbing harness, build a puppet, prepare the land. You call on allies: neighbors, cousins, students. You put on trousers. You take up shovels. You stand before the houses. You raise your signs. You claim your ground. You hoist the flag. This is what stands before you: The decolonization of the countryside.
