THE AESTHETICS OF NEEDS: REHEARSING REPARATION: A conversation on degrowth, overproduction and the recycling of ideas

The covid period also posed a question: What kind of artistic practice becomes possible when production is no longer its centre? This became the starting point of choreographer and dancer Viktorija Ilioska’s master’s research at Giessen’s Institute for Applied Theatre Studies. She followed Serge Latouche’s proposal of the eight principles of degrowth – re-evaluate, reconceptualise, restructure, redistribute, relocalise, reduce, re-use and recycle – as well as Valeria Graziano’s reflections on recreation and reparation wondering whether these principles could also operate as choreographic tools.

What happens when these principles are exercised as artistic methodologies. Can the eight R’s become practical tools for organising artistic work? Can recycling apply not only to materials, but also to ideas, unfinished projects, methods and relationships? What kinds of artistic practices become possible when we stop measuring value through continuous production?

This table invites everyone curious about degrowth as an artistic methodology, especially artists, cultural workers and practitioners. It is an invitation to exchange experiences, doubts, strategies and contradictions.
